Admission to the CEPLAS Graduate School

What we offer – at a glimpse

  • a three-year structured Ph.D. programme jointly organised by all four partnering CEPLAS institutions in the Cologne/Düsseldorf area of Germany
  • a stimulating research environment focussing on plants: Ph.D. projects cover topics including molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, developmental biology of plants and plant-microbe interactions, all using state-of-the-art technology and computational analysis.
  • a comprehensive training programme in scientific and transferable skills (e.g. scientific writing, giving presentations etc.)
  • a three-year employment contract or stipend to cover your costs of living
  • additional funding to attend conferences and workshops
  • funding for a research period in a laboratory abroad
  • help with obtaining a visa, if needed, and with other organisational issues such as health insurance coverage etc.

There is no tuition fee associated with this programme, except for an approx. 200 € fee per semester for enrolment at the University which grants you student’s rights such as free local public transportation.

Admission requirements

The CEPLAS Graduate School is an English language programme and open to applicants from all countries. Prerequisite for admission to the CEPLAS Graduate School is a degree equivalent to a Master´s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or in another closely related field. Outstanding students with a three-year Bachelor´s degree (or equivalent) can be admitted through the Fast Track doctoral programmes offered at the University of Cologne or the University of Düsseldorf. Knowledge of the German language is not required; however very good skills in spoken and written English are necessary.
